If you were to ask me what is one of the most important skills I have learnt over recent years, I would say it was learning to meditate. As a globetrotting entrepreneur now who is also building an online business on the go, the abillity to meditate has become essential for me and I would recommend anyone to get into it.
Here is how meditating consistently, pretty much daily, these past 5 years has done for me.
– I have learnt to take way better care of myself- mentally especially. It was way too busy in there.
– I am more in tuned with my intuition or as Oprah would call it, my inner GPS. So I listen and act on my gut more often than not. It never fails me yet. It is an integral part of my decision-making process.
– I listen and observe more than I speak now.
– I can sense people’s energy even more now and I’ve gotten way better at not taking on people’s negative or weird shit.
– I have become even more fearless and adventurous.
– I am able to be more calm and focused when a bunch of horseshit is happening around me.
– It has been one of the things that brought my borderline hypertension back to normal.
-It helps me to sleep better. I now know how to take myself from insomnia zone to calmAF mode.
I got started about 8 years ago when I started doing yoga as a coping mechanism for stress. My instructor yogi Donovan Manning told me I was breathing incorrectly. Of course I looked at him like he was crazy, then when he guided me to better breathing, to meditating…I was like wow. I was in the past someone who under stress would breathe in a very shallow way or hold my breaths. Nothing like being mindful, conscious of how you breathe to get you to be present and really check in with your headspace and your body. It changed my life and I’ve been doing largely guided meditation with Deepak Chopra and other videos I find on Youtube. Now I meditative every morning and sometimes twice a day depending on what is going on.
How Would I recommend You Get Started?
For anyone just beginning I would recommend you do guided meditations, meaning someone who uses audio or video to guide you through an initial 5 – 10 mins. I would start with these Youtube videos
- So Hum Meditation – The So Hum meditation is a simple but powerful technique that uses the breath and the repetition of a mantra to quiet the mind and relax the body. Find it here.
- 11 Mins of Om So Hum Mantra Meditation ❯ Reduces Stress ❯ Brings Spontaneous Joy & Happiness – This one I use to calm myself down and I tend to start with this most mornings and move on to something else after for a total of 20-30mins. Find it here.
